PADEK.JAWAPOS.COM-For many students, learning English has long been about memorizing vocabulary lists, repeating dialogues, and passing grammar tests. While these traditional methods may help with short-term goals, they often leave students struggling to use English naturally in real-life situations. This raises an important question: Is memorization enough to help students truly learn English?

Today, educators are beginning to see learning from a new perspective, one that goes beyond remembering words and rules. It’s called deep learning, and it is transforming how students understand and use English in classrooms across the world.

Deep learning in education is not about technology or artificial intelligence. It is about how students think, understand, and connect knowledge. Unlike surface learning, which focuses on repeating information, deep learning encourages students to explore meaning, ask questions, and apply what they learn to new situations.

In English classrooms, this means moving from mechanical drills to meaningful communication. Instead of just practicing grammar, students discuss ideas, share opinions, and relate English to their real experiences. Deep learning helps them see that language is not just a subject, it is a way to express themselves and connect with others.

When teachers apply deep learning, classrooms become more alive and student-centered. Students no longer sit quietly waiting for instructions: they participate, collaborate, and create. A teacher might, for example, ask students to discuss how technology influences their daily lives, guiding them to use new vocabulary and sentence structures naturally in conversation.

Another class might write a short article about local culture or interview community members in English. Through these activities, students learn to use English for thinking and problem-solving, not just for answering exam questions.

This approach builds communication skills, confidence, and creativity. Students begin to see English as a useful tool in understanding the world around them. Many teachers who use this approach report that their students become more motivated and engaged because they see a purpose in what they are learning.

In deep learning, teachers are not only knowledge providers, they are facilitators and guides. They design lessons that challenge students to think critically and encourage them to find answers independently.

Instead of giving direct corrections, teachers might ask, “Why do you think this sentence sounds better?” or “How can you express that idea more clearly?” These kinds of questions help students reflect on their use of language and develop a deeper awareness of how English works.

Moreover, teachers who practice deep learning understand that mistakes are part of growth. They create safe spaces where students can experiment, share ideas, and learn from one another.

Transitioning from traditional teaching to deep learning is not always easy. It requires time, creativity, and support. Teachers may need training to design more interactive and reflective activities. Schools also need to provide resources and encourage collaboration among educators.

Parents and communities play an important role too. When they value meaningful learning over grades alone, students feel freer to explore, take risks, and grow. Though it takes effort, deep learning offers long-term rewards, it prepares students not only to master English but also to think critically, communicate effectively, and adapt to the future.

English teaching today faces a choice: continue with memorization-based routines or move toward deeper, more meaningful learning. Deep learning invites us to see education as a process of understanding, connecting, and creating. It reminds us that learning a language is not just about getting the answers right, it is about expressing who we are and engaging with the world.

If teachers, schools, and communities work together to promote deep learning, English education can become a powerful way to build thoughtful, confident, and globally minded students. It is time to move from memorizing English to living it.(Yuyud Andam Mellian, S.S, GURU SMPN 7 PAYAKUMBUH)
